When in Scotland! Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall don full tartan in Aberdeenshire

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall both sported full tartan checks today as they visited a heritage and community centre in Aberdeenshire before taking a stroll around a nearby village.

The couple, known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay when they’re north of the border, looked to be in jovial spirits as they unveiled a plaque to mark the opening of the Ballater Community and Heritage Hub on Tuesday.

Charles and Camilla also enjoyed a quick promenade around the Scottish village, chatting to locals – including a pet dog – and stopping to visit the Cambus O’May Suspension Bridge which is back in action following an ongoing repair project.

August 31st marks the 24th anniversary of the Princess of Wales’ death in a car crash in Paris.

Prince Charles, 72, donned his favoured Balmoral tartan – including a green and blue checked kilt and a brown leather sporran – for the public outing.

The Balleter centre aims to support the community and social outcomes for people living in the Royal Deeside region and, following the unveiling of the official plaque, the couple headed into the village to speak to local business owners.

Well-wishers greeted the pair and they stopped to chat to an employee at Shorty’s, an ice cream parlour in the centre.

For the visit, the heir to the throne wore a smart tweed blazer, waistcoat and a crisp white shirt to finish the heritage look, alongside maroon socks and black brogues.

Prince Charles has been wearing the Balmoral tartan since his early childhood, with photos showing him sporting it as far back as his seventh birthday in 1955.

Meanwhile, Camilla opted for a black, grey and red check, which she wore in a knee-length skirt covered with an elegant frilled cream blouse and grey waistcoat. She complemented the skirt with a matching shawland caramel-hued shoes.

The couple enjoyed a walk through the village today, as well as chatting to 90-year-old Hugh Inkster who also donned a traditional kilt.

Earlier this month, the royal wore the same outfit to visit the historic stronghold of Dunrobin Castle, the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses.

Today marks 24 years since the Princess of Wales was killed in a Paris car crash on August 31st 1997.

On July 1st this year, Princes William and Harry unveiled a statue in the gardens of Kensington Palace in their mother’s memory.

The statue by Ian Rank-Broadley depicts Diana in the ‘more confident’ later years of her life aims to reflect her ‘warmth, elegance and energy’, the sculptor said today – as it was met with a mixed reaction.

It’s been reported that Charles has been left ‘shellshocked’ by the reported rift between his sons Prince William and Prince Harry.

While the funeral of their grandfather Prince Philip in April reunited the family for the first time in a year, the Duke of Cambridge, 39, and the Duke of Sussex, 36, reportedly ‘didn’t have time to heal’.

It comes in the aftermath of Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive two-hour CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey which aired in March, where the royal made reference to his relation with William amid reports the brothers had fallen out in the wake of Brexit.

Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir about life in the royal family is due to be published in 2022.
