‘It works!’: Michael Mosley shares ‘sustainable’ weight loss plan – red wine allowed

Dr Michael Mosley often shares his weight loss tips with slimmers online as well as on television. The diet plan which he often recommends is The Fast 800, a plan which involves eating just 800 calories a day to help reduce body fat.

Recommended for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of 12, the diet plan isn’t suitable for everyone.

Eating just 800 calories a day can be hard for many, compared to the 2,000 recommended for women and 2,500 for men.

Although the calorie intake is minimal, Michael Mosley explained that the diet encourages Mediterranean style recipes as well as consuming a small amount of carbohydrates which will keep slimmers fuller for longer.

Meal replacement shakes are also used, designed with all the nutrients and vitamins needed.

“The reason you may feel hungry and perhaps more tired than usual for the first week that you are on the diet is because your body is having to adapt to running on a different fuel. But you should soon start to feel better – more energetic and clearer thinking.”

Speaking about the diet, Dr Mosley explained: “Most rapid weight loss studies are now based on 800 calories a day, which is high enough to be sustainable and give the nutrients you need, and low enough to lead to rapid weight loss and other beneficial health changes.

“You might worry about getting hungry but most people who follow The Fast 800 diet say that within a very short time your hunger passes.”

Slimmers following the diet plan have access to hundreds of healthy recipes online as well as guided exercise plans and shopping lists.

“Healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts are encouraged as well as the occasional glass of wine or bite of dark chocolate is allowed, so that people eat well, remain satiated and don’t feel deprived.”

The expert also recommends keeping a snack close to help prevent hunger while intermittent fasting.

He added: “The best way to prevent hunger when you’re intermittent fasting is to use something like a meal replacement shake. Follow The Fast 800 programme because it has been very carefully calibrated to ensure it gives you the maximum nutrients and the maximum amount of fibre and protein.

“The reason people get hungry is because they’ve eaten something that’s very high in sugar or carbs, so they get a massive rise in blood sugar levels and then they crash and get hungry.”

Dr Mosley advises eating something rich in protein such as a handful of nuts which are packed with healthy fats.

Slimmers should also aim to eat around 50g of protein each day which can be sourced from foods like lean meats as well as beans and legumes.
