Chelsea centre back Ethan Ampadu has joined Serie A side Venezia on a season-long loan but has also penned a new three-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Blues from Exeter City in 2017, spent the 2020-2021 campaign on loan with Sheffield United – where he made 25 Premier League appearances.

The move to Italy will be Ampadu’s third spell away from Stamford Bridge, with his other loan coming at Red Bull Leipzig in 2019-2020.

Ampadu is currently with the Wales squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Estonia.

The youngster played in all three of Wales’ group games at Euro 2020 but was banned for the last 16 clash with Denmark after being sent off against Italy.

The defender, who can also operate in midfield, has made 12 first-team appearances for Chelsea.

But it was clear game time with the Blues this season would be limited and the club decided he would benefit from regular playing time.

Venezia regained promotion to Serie A last season via the Serie B play-offs.

The club have lost their opening two fixtures against Napoli and Udinese and will face a battle to avoid relegation.

Ampadu is the sixth player to make the switch from west London Italy this summer, with Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Davide Zappacosta and Olivier Giroud all joining Serie A clubs.

Tomori, Giroud and Bakayoko all signed for AC Milan, Abraham is with Jose Mourinho at Roma while Zappacosta joined Napoli.
