Hurricane Ida pictures: 5 catastrophic photos that show utter devastation of New Orleans

Hurricane Ida, a Category 4 hurricane system, has blasted much of the coastline along the southern US, leaving catastrophic destruction in its wake. The hurricane made landfall in the state of Louisiana yesterday afternoon.

Hurricane Ida initially brought 150mph winds when it first struck Louisiana.

One death has been reported so far due to a tree falling on a house near the Baton Rouge area.

The storm’s path has continued to move northwards, with the system hitting New Orleans today.

The US city has been left without power due to the hurricane, with only generators working.

The President has released extra funds to aid the rescue and recovery efforts.

The White House said: “Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.”

Trees and telephone lines have been blown over, and many properties have had their rooves ripped off.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said: “This is going to be much stronger than we usually see and, quite frankly, if you had to draw up the worst possible path for a hurricane in Louisiana, it would be something very, very close to what we’re seeing.”

The President has warned the storm is “life-threatening”, with huge devastation likely beyond the coasts.

The area has already been struck by a deadly resurgence in Covid cases.

The emergence of the Delta variant and low vaccination rates has caused problems in the area.

Concerns have been raised that further hotspots could appear at the shelters created for those forced to abandon their homes.
