  • The Football Association could launch a bid to host the Euros in 2028 or 2032
  • This would come instead of a bid for the World Cup – taking place in nine years
  • The FA are looking into what a combined British and Irish bid could achieve

The Football Association could launch a bid to host the Euros in 2028 or 2032 instead of the World Cup in nine years’ time.

Mark Bullingham has said that the FA are currently assessing their chances of winning the vote for the 2030 World Cup with a joint British and Irish bid, according to The Times.

If a bid for the World Cup is deemed unfeasible, the FA will turn their attention to the 2028 and 2030 European Championship as it is less expensive and less risky.

Boris Johnson hoped to bring the World Cup to the UK for the first time since 1966 with a £2.8million joint-bid with Ireland.

If successful it would have seen World Cup matches played in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Fans were excited about the prospect of hosting the World Cup once again after winning the tournament last time it was played on home soil.

However, it now seems likely that England will look to host either the 2028 or 2030 European Championship instead.

This is because UEFA only wants one European World Cup bid – meaning the British-Irish bid will face stiff competition from the Spain-Portugal bid.

Therefore, the FA may look for the next best option and aim to host the European Championship instead.

Speaking on the Unofficial Partner podcast, Bullingham said: ‘Fifa won’t be releasing their bid book until March so we have got to formulate an opinion quite soon after that.

‘From our point of view we think it’s positive for the country to host major events, whether that’s a Euros or whether that’s a World Cup, so if we have a real chance of winning one of those then we will throw everything behind it.

‘But it is important to look at things really objectively and understand what your opportunity is.’

However, Britain’s chances of hosting a major tournament may be under threat following the misbehaviour of the England fans at the Euro 2020 final.

The showpiece match which England lost on penalties to Italy after a 1-1 draw was marred by a series of shocking incidents, including thousands of ticketless fans getting into the ground and attacking others on the concourse.

As a result of the fan’s behaviour, the FA were charged with the following: invasion of the field of play by supporters; throwing of objects by supporters; disturbance caused by supporters during the national anthem; and lighting of a firework by supporters.

The FA were also fined £25,630 for crowd problems, including the shining of a laser pointer at a player, during England’s semi-final win over Denmark.

The Premier League  announced on Tuesday that clubs would not release players due to play in nations on the UK Government’s red list.

The decision applies to nearly 60 players from 19 clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries.

As a result, Gianni Infantino has had to write to Boris Johnson to request exemptions for players due to play in ‘red list’ countries during the upcoming international break.
