Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer addresses Cristiano Ronaldo transfer question

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Norwegian press that he knows nothing about Manchester City’s reported interest in Cristiano Ronaldo – claiming that he does not read newspapers as there is “much nonsense written in there.”

Ex-United star Ronaldo has been linked to City in recent weeks after their £150million move for Harry Kane broke down, as the Citizens weren’t prepared to make the England captain the third-most expensive player in history.

Talks broke down between Spurs chief Daniel Levy and the City board, with Levy refusing to budge on his £150m price tag on his prized asset despite recieving a monumentous bid of £128m from Pep Guardiola’s men – sparking rumours of City potentially moving for superstar Ronaldo.

And after starting on the bench for Juventus in last Sunday’s fixture against Udinese, the gossip picked up pace across the continent.

But, when asked about what may happen at United if Ronaldo was to move to the Etihad, Solskjaer told the Norweigan press: “I do not read newspapers. I know how much nonsense is written there, anyway.”

City have already bought Jack Grealish this window as they smashed the British transfer record themselves with a £100m agreement for the Aston Villa and England favourite.

But with Sergio Aguero leaving for Barcelona and Gabriel Jesus not properly fulfilling the requirements for a striker that Pep Guardiola desires, the move was made for Kane in a bid to propel them one step further in the Champions League by winning the trophy.

However, after talks for the England captain broke down, Ronaldo has reportedly become their new number one target.

It was always thought that United would sign the Portugal star once more, with his achievements at Old Trafford earlier this century giving him legendary status amongst fans of the Red Devils.

However, if a move was to materialise to the Etihad, it would remain to be seen whether United fans would sing his praises any longer.

United have had a successful transfer window of their own, bringing in much needed defensive steel in Raphael Varane and youthful attacker Jadon Sancho for a combined £115m, as Solskjaer continues to stamp his authority upon the Red Devils.

However, in an interview with Norwegian media, Solskjaer accepted there would likely be little transfer news coming out of Old Trafford as the deadline fast approaches.

“I don’t think much is going to happen,” the Norwegian said.

“If something happens, it is a bonus. You never know what happens in the world of football. But we’ve had a very good window. I am happy with what we’ve done.”

United have been linked with signing a central midfielder in recent weeks, although given Solskjaer’s words that seems incredibly unlikely.

West Ham United’s Declan Rice has been a major link in recent weeks, but with the Premier League leaders quoting a fee of over £100m to secure his signature, it may have to be next summer that Solskjaer’s men move for the London-born maestro.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has also been linked in recent days, but with Chelsea also in the race for the midfielder, a move again seems unlikely.

United will look to get back to winning ways in the league with a win over Wolves at Molineux on Sunday.
