Burnley boss Sean Dyche has hit back at Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool manager singled out his players and accused them of playing rough.

Klopp named Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood and Josh Brownhill when venting his frustrations at the visitors’ physicality during his side’s 2-0 win at Anfield on Saturday.

‘My disappointment is he’s name-checking players,’ Dyche said. ‘There’s absolutely no need to do that. We’ve got professional players who have worked very hard to get to where they have got.

‘The implications of what he said about challenges are wrong. I think it’s inappropriate and it’s not something I would do myself. My worry is he’s questioned that teams shouldn’t do everything within the rules to win the game, which we clearly did because there wasn’t a single card given out.’

Unlike Klopp and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dyche said the new lenient approach to refereeing this season is a ‘step in the right direction’.

Meanwhile, it emerged on Monday that Liverpool are refusing to release four players for international duty due to quarantine restrictions.

Concerned about their stars missing league games, they have told Egypt and Brazil’s federations that they do not intend to let Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Alisson or Fabinho leave.

Sportsmail revealed last weekend that a club-versus-country row was brewing over the Premier League’s South American stars.

Manchester City also hold concerns over Brazil stars Ederson and Gabriel Jesus.
