Tropical Storm Henri makes landfall in Rhode Island

Tropical Storm Henri made landfall in Rhode Island early Sunday afternoon after it skimmed the eastern end of Long Island and spared New York a direct hit.

The storm, which was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane hours earlier, hit Rhode Island’s eastern coast near Westerly — about 25 miles north of Montauk, LI — around 12:15 p.m., the National Hurricane Center said.

At the time of landfall, Henri had maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph with gusts as high as 70 mph, according to the agency.

The storm is expected to pummel the northeastern coastline all day Sunday as it tears through southern New England.
