The Adam Driver fan accounts have their work cut out for them with Annette, the fantastical operatic musical now streaming free on Amazon Prime Video. While no one could ever accuse the director/verified mad man Leos Carax of pandering to audiences—not when a large portion of his movie features a singing baby played by the world’s creepiest puppet—he does indulge Driver fans by putting a lot of the Star Wars actor on display.
Because yes, you will see Adam Driver’s butt within the first 20 minutes of this beautiful, chaotic movie. And soon after that, you’ll see Adam Driver performing oral sex on Marion Cotillard, while singing. From there it’s just hop, skip, and a jump to a shot of Driver’s (and Cotillard’s) fully naked profile, thrusting in time with the music.
Of course, there’s a lot more to this movie than just sex and nudity. Driver stars as a pessimistic, abrasive comedian named Henry McHenry who falls into a whirlwind love affair with a beloved opera singer named Ann, played by Cotillard. The two quickly get married and have a child—baby Annette, played by the aforementioned puppet—and much of the film is focused on Henry’s troubled relationship with being a husband and father. The sex and romance is frontloaded by design, so there’s time for everything to fall apart.
Still, it’s hard not to get a tad juvenile when faced with so much of Kylo Ren’s bare skin. While the singing cunnilingus was certainly memorable, for some reason it’s that first instance of mooning that’s stuck in my mind. It’s the first scene where we meet Henry, in his element, performing his mumbling, low-energy comedy on stage in nothing but a bathrobe and a pair of boxers. After berating his soon-to-be wife for taking too many bows after her opera shows, Henry ends his comedy show in a very different manner: By blowing kisses, shedding his robe, and pulling down his boxers to flash the audience as he exits the stage.
It’s a confident mooning. There’s no hesitation from Driver as he yanks down those shorts. The audience screams, and honestly, same.
It makes absolutely no sense for a depressed comedian to be the level of ripped that Adam Driver is in Annette, but I am also not complaining. Plus, Driver’s impressive physique and his alarmingly wide chest are put to good narrative use later, when Henry becomes a menacing physical threat to more than one person who makes the mistake of pissing him off. Let’s just see those muscles one more time…?
The point is, Annette the movie is a lot of things, including, however unintentionally, a wealth of riches for the Adam Driver thirst accounts. And the best part?
