Ms James adds pressure on the Princess Royal to “conform” during teenage years was “considerable”.

She added: “People wanted a fairy-tale princess and they also wanted a princess who could be something of a fashion role-model.

“Women of the era still tended to be judged on their looks first and foremost and there were signs that Anne did attempt to fit into this stereotype right up to and until her first years of marriage.”

As a result of the pressure of these stereotypes, Ms James claims to notice a “slight lowering” of Anne’s confidence levels during these years.
