England took four wickets in the morning session to cut through into India’s tail but the tourists are on course for a very good first innings total.

There was a thrilling start to the second day at Lord’s as England picked up two wickets in the first seven balls, a belated reward for their first day endeavours.

Opener KL Rahul saw his brilliant knock of 129 from 250 balls ended by Ollie Robinson and then Ajinkya Rahane came and went for just one as James Anderson collected his third wicket.

Rishabh Pant countered in typically daring fashion, making 37 before Mark Wood found a thin edge through to Jos Buttler.

Mohammed Shami failed to score as Moeen Ali also got in on the act for a soft dismissal and India reached the lunch break on 346 for seven.

Given the continued fears over the durability of England’s batting, it already looks like a potentially match-winning total even if Joe Root’s side will have confidence buoyed by their morning wickets.

It was a marked contrast to day one when India batted in brilliant defiance of overcast conditions to reach 276 for three after Rahul and Rohit Sharma put on 126 in a superb opening stand.

It was a poignant occasion at the Home of Cricket as spectators were encouraged to wear red in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

Former England captain Andrew Strauss and children who have lost parents and been supported by the Foundation rang the five minute bell as the players from both teams formed a heart shape on the outfield.
