Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa recently spoke to Decider about Archie’s time on the frontlines and explained why the writers chose to give him this storyline, saying: “He’s on this epic arc, the heart of the show. He’s on this epic hero’s journey.
“Going through difficult rites of passages, losing his father, the high school football star whose promise hasn’t been fulfilled,” he continued.
“We thought after spending some time going after the Naval Academy, we thought that another way is to continue the classic, archetypical hero goes off to war.
“We thought that that could be interesting.”
Hopefully, audiences will be able to learn of Archie’s past in order to better understand what the tortured character is currently going through.
Riverdale seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix, and part two of season five resumes on August 11.
