Olympic Breakfast suffers green screen blunder as BBC viewers spot glitch 'Whoopsie!'

Dan Walker and Sam Quek were back to present Olympic Breakfast on Saturday where they brought BBC viewers the latest coverage of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The instalment saw diver Tom Daley win a bronze medal for his solo dive in the men’s platform final. They also showed coverage of the men’s track race. However, when they cut back to the BBC studio, the broadcaster seemed to suffer a glitch as viewers were able to see the green screen behind the presenters, instead of the background of Tokyo.

During the segment, Dan and Sam welcomed British racing driver Chris Hoy to the show to discuss the latest sports coverage.

Sam began by updating their Team GB scoreboard which had a bronze, silver and gold column on it.

She then began to place pictures of the Olympians who had recently won medals for Team GB.

Chris also took his turn by getting out of his seat to update the board.

“I’ve been struggling with the double-sided sticky tape all week,” Dan joked. “You could be a Blue Peter presenter.”

Chris went on to explain that he had a hand peeling the tape before they went to air.

Dan continued: “They do that because you’ve won so many medals, they do that for you.”

However, as the racing driver was taking his seat, the background changed, and viewers were able to see the green screen behind them.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 closing ceremony will follow the last few events on Sunday, August 8.

Taking the opportunity to thank BBC viewers for watching Olympic Breakfast, Dan began: “Thank you to all of you who have sent loads of messages over the course of these Olympic Games.

“It’s been brilliant to see so many waking up with this programme, and in such a divisive year, the fact that the Olympics has brought so many people together has just been truly awe-inspiring.”

He turned to his co-host, adding: “And Sam, I know you were a bit daunted coming in to cover these Olympic Games for the first time but you have been simply amazing.”

Sam replied: “Oh Dan, you know what to hear you say that – I’m so delighted because it’s been such a pleasure to be sat with you.

“To experience the drama, the medals, the emotions of the Olympic Games but also like I said, to do it beside you and you helped me get through my first official big broadcast.”

“You’ve been a pleasure,” Dan responded. “Enjoy tomorrow.”

Olympic Breakfast returns on Sunday at 6am on BBC One.
