Joe Biden impeachment: US President under huge pressure as calls to oust him mount

Outspoken Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene has called for the 78-year-old to be removed from office over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and migrant crisis in the US. The Congresswoman for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District took aim at President Biden after reacting to the latest immigration statistics on social media.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin tweeted the latest data from the city of McAllen in Texas, which found over 7,000 migrants who had tested positive for Covid were allowed into the city since February.

The figure included over 1,500 newly infected migrants in the last week.

Responding on Twitter, Ms Greene wrote: “That’s it. Time to IMPEACH BIDEN.”

The 47-year-old has been a fierce critic of President Biden and has supported unfounded claims of electoral fraud in his November 2020 election win over Donald Trump.

Ms Greene was also temporarily banned from Twitter following the Capitol riots in January.

The day after Mr Biden was inaugurated as the 46th US President she also called for him to be removed from the White House.

She said: “I’ve just filed articles of impeachment on President Joe Biden, we will see how this goes.”

Earlier this week another prominent voice in the US also called for Mr Biden to be impeached.

Fox News presenter Mark Levin suggested Republicans should consider trying to impeach Mr Biden over the flow of migrants at the US-Mexico border.

The US lawyer, author and broadcaster claimed the Biden administration “has the border wide open in violation of our immigration laws”.

Speaking on The Sean Hannity Show on Fox News, Mr Levin said: “Let me say this. I brought this up on my radio show last week. Republicans, have you heard of the word impeachment?

“You guys going to go down to the border and whine yourselves to death?

“I know you’re not in the majority, but you need to start explaining to the American people. This demand is violated a Supreme Court decision.

“And moreover, he just defied a federal, Supreme Court decision, he knows the CDC does not have the power to extend these moratoriums already, he says we’re going to do it anyway because he listens to this Harvard Emeritus Professor Laurence Tribe. He’s just violated the federal constitution.”

The Biden administration had been hesitant to implement the extension despite growing pressure from Democrats.

On Monday, the White House said the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had turned down a request for a new scaled-down pandemic-related moratorium, citing a lack of legal authority to take the action.

On Tuesday Mr Biden said: “The bulk of the constitutional scholarship says that it’s not likely to pass constitutional muster… I don’t know. There are a few scholars who say it will and others who say it’s not likely to.”

The Supreme Court had narrowly voted by 5-4 to keep the safety net in place until the end of July and at the time one judge said Congress would have to act to extend it further.

Mr Biden did not announce an extension to the legalisation during a press conference on Tuesday, he added: “My hope is it’s going to be a new moratorium.”

A new order to stop evictions in counties with “substantial and high levels” of virus transmission was later confirmed by the CDC and announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
