'A possible health risk': Tesco & SPAR issue urgent food recalls – 'undeclared' ingredient

The food recalls were issued by the Food Standards Agency and warn certain items could be a “possible health risk” to some customers. Two separate recalls for different items were issued for supermarkets Tesco and SPAR.

“The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers.

“This notice explains to customers why the product is being recalled and tells them what to do if they have bought the product.”

Customers are advised they must not “consume this product” if they have an allergy to almonds.

“Return the affected product to store where a full refund

will be given,” states the recall.

“No receipt is required.

“Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”

SPAR

The second recall regards SPAR Crispy Breaded Haddock Fillets and SPAR Crispy Breaded Cod Fillets.

Both items “may contain crustaceans, milk, molluscs, mustard and sulphur dioxide (sulphites) which are not mentioned on the label.”

This means products could be “a possible health risk” for people with specific allergies.

The Food Standards Agency explains: “This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to crustaceans, and/or an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, and/or an allergy to molluscs, and/or an allergy to mustard and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.”

The warning applies specifically to 285g packs of SPAR Crispy Breaded Haddock Fillets spanning all use by dates.

Similarly, the SPAR Crispy Breaded Cod Fillets all weigh 285g and span all use by dates.

“SPAR is recalling the above products from customers and have been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall,” states the Food Standards Agency.

“Company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.”

In a warning to customers, SPAR states: “Please do not consume and return the product(s) from your fridge and/or freezer, to the store you purchased them from for a full refund.

“No other SPAR products or batch codes are affected.

“SPAR would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”
