Labour pushing through 'catastrophic' parking charges which could 'destroy' town centre

The council is run by Labour who control 30 seats from the Consertauve’s 23 seats. Wirral’s Environment and Transport Committee voted to bring in a new parking charge across more off-street bays last month.

This would standardise fees across every council-run car park in the Wirral.

The new rules would see drivers charged £1 per hour for the first four hours with a maximum £5 fee for a full day.

However, this would include many coastal car parks which are currently free to use.

The changes would also see new fees introduced at bays in local villages, close to businesses that rely on customers.

As a result, Conservative Councillors have voted against the plans to introduce the new charges.

The Liberal Democrats are also against the updates but have abstained from voting on the issue.

Councillor Phil Gilchrist, leader of the Liberal Democrats on the council, warned many residents believes the charges would “finish” off their local area.

He said: “Most who talk to me about car parking charges say they will kill, destroy or finish Bromborough.”

The decision was up for review at a local committee meeting last night.
