'We're going to the top' – Karriss Artingstall celebrates huge upset at Tokyo Olympics

Karris Artingstall is guaranteed at least a bronze medal in the women’s featherweight after defeating Australia’s Skye Nicolson by a split decision on day five of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Artingstall had begun the Games by thrashing world No 3 Jucielen Romeu in the opening round.

Nicolson won featherweight gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and was tipped for more success at this year’s Olympics.

But Artingstall continued her fine run, winning three of the five rounds to advance into the semi-finals.

And she was clearly ecstatic as she exited the ring, shouting into the ringside camera that she plans on “going to the top”.

“That was for you mum, I love you,” she said.

“Come on! We’re going to the top!”

When asked whether Nicolson was a tricky opponent, Artingstall told BBC: “Yeah, she’s very clever.

“She’s different to the ones I’ve boxed before. She’s a southpaw like myself but she will not come and rush out to make a mistake for me to counter so I’ve got to press on my front foot.

“They [her corner] told me I was a round up in the first and the second went her way and they were like, ‘you need to go out there now and just up the tempo’.
