Newcastle came from behind to draw 1-1 with League One side Rotherham as Steve Bruce’s men continued their pre-season preparations. 

The Magpies had to wait until the 84th minute to find the back of the net with Paul Warne’s team frustrating their Premier League opponents for large periods.

The Millers were deservedly ahead early in the first half and it was a boyhood Newcastle fan who put them in front.

Wallsend-born Michael Smith, who started his career with Darlington, opened the scoring in the eighth minute when he headed home Mickel Miller’s cross from the left wing. 

Bruce fielded a strong starting XI, with Callum Wilson leading the line with Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Ryan Fraser also part of the attack.

As many as 1,448 away fans made the trip from the North East to cheer on their side at the New York Stadium. And they were finally given something to cheer five minutes from time.

Jeff Hendrick had been on the pitch 12 minutes when he headed in Jacob Murphy’s corner to bring the Magpies level.

Youngster Joe White came off the bench for his first appearance in the senior team. The 18-year-old midfielder came on for Dwight Gayle in the 77th minute.

Newcastle take on more League One opposition in Burton Albion on Friday before their final fixture against Norwich on August 7.

They kick off their Premier League campaign against West Ham on August 15.
