Doom (1993) – A Ripping, Tearing Throwback in Gaming History

Yep. And it’s also single-handedly the quote that took Doom in the wrong direction. The modern Doom games might be OK games in isolation, but they missed the point for me. The original Doom might have had fast movement, but again, this lends into the misconception that Doom was about run and gun action and “ripping and tearing”. It wasn’t. The original Doom was a horror game, both thematically, and in actual gameplay. It was arguably the first game to be genuinely scary. The atmosphere and the traps when you’d take a key or weapon and the lights would go out and a door opened up behind you with demons pouring out. I think the PS1 version of the game is as close to a proper Doom reboot there has been, as it took the game and gave the horror aspect an overhaul with new music and lighting. If only the newer Dooms even managed to recapture half of that. Meanwhile Doom 3 gets a bad rep, but to me, it’s more of a Doom game than the 2016 version.
