The Handmaid's Tale season 5: June and Luke's split 'sealed' after final scene

The recent season finale of Hulu’s dystopian series saw June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) finally get revenge for the abuse she endured in Gilead. However, fans are convinced June’s relationship with husband Luke Bankole (O.T. Fagbenle) could come to an end in the upcoming season of The Handmaid’s Tale.

For over seven years, June was forced to be a Handmaid in Gilead after they went into power.

The fact that she was fertile and married to a divorced man made her ideal as the state had outlawed divorce, making her an adulterer.

In season one showed how far Gilead’s authorities would go, as they ripped June’s daughter, Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake), out of her arms and shot Luke, as the family tried to flee the country.

Throughout her time in Gilead, Luke and June both fought the same fight as they battled to get their family back together.

As Hannah is placed in a home with another family, June made numerous attempts to escape Gilead with her.

After each unsuccessful attempt, she received a tougher punishment, as shown when cruel disciplinarian Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) encountered June.

Elsewhere in Canada, Luke spent his time campaigning against Gilead despite having no clue whether his wife and daughter were still alive.

However, he received confirmation in season one and later reunited with June’s best friend Moira Strand (Samira Wiley) who had escaped, to fight for the freedom of the women captured in Gilead.

This was until the season finale when June finally got revenge on her captor, Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes). He was in custody in Canada and, despite June giving a witness testimony in court, acquitted after offering inside information in exchange for immunity.

In light of this, she was able to conspire behind his back and have him sent back to face a trial in Gilead instead of his gaining freedom in Gilead.

In a shocking turn of events, June and a number of ex-handmaids had him surrounded in no man’s land where they chased him and beat him to death.

With murder on her hands, viewers are convinced that this could be the end of June and Luke in season five.

In her final scene, June was home, bloodied and cradling baby Nicole, apologising to Luke and saying goodbye to her.

One fan took to Reddit with an interesting theory: “She says sorry because there is an instant understanding by Luke that she murdered a man and it will ruin their relationship.” The user added: “She acts that way towards Nicole for two reasons 1) her and Luke can’t be together after this and 2) she’s going to leave to fight Gilead.”

With season five confirmed and in the works, fans will have to wait until its release to find out if June and Luke will split despite all they’ve been through – and if she will return to Gilead for more revenge.
