Arizona gunman in critical condition after killing neighbor, shooting firefighters at house fire

Gunman, 35, goes on a rampage in Arizona, killing one man with a shot to the head at the scene of a house fire where a charred body is found and up to three children are missing

  • One person was shot and killed at the site of a house fire where a body was discovered in Tucson
  • Up to three children who lived at the house remain missing
  • The suspected gunman was shot by cops and is in ‘very critical condition’
  • The man first shot one male EMT in the head and a female EMT in the chest at a park
  • The man later rammed his SUV into a cop car at a nearby street before being shot

A crazed gunman shot dead one person and wounded four others during a rampage near an Arizona home where a body was also found in the charred remains and up to three children were missing, police said Sunday.

The shooting spree began at a park, continued at the already-chaotic scene of a house fire and ended with police shooting the madman in a standoff in Tucson.

It’s not immediately known if there is a connection between the shootings and the house fire.

“This is both a highly tragic, really horrific incident with many unknowns at this time,” Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus said during a press conference.

The 35-year-old suspect opened fire on an ambulance crew at around 3:45pm in Quincie Douglas Center, Magnus said.

The driver of the ambulance, a 20-year-old man, was shot in the head, and a paramedic in the passenger seat, a 21-year-old woman, was shot in the chest and arm.

The suspect had flagged the EMTs down and pointed them in the direction of the nearby residential fire before shooting them, according to a statement from the Tucson Police Department.

The man is in critical condition and the woman is stable.

The unidentified suspect then drove to the scene of a house fire in the 2100 block of East Irene Vista and shot at bystanders and firefighters trying to douse the flames, Magnus said.

A 44-year-old neighbor was shot in the head and died.

A firefighter was shot in the arm, and a bullet grazed another neighbor’s head.

A ‘badly burned’ body was found inside the home that was on fire, and ‘two or three’ children who lived there are missing, Magnus told KVOA.

Officials are asking the public’s help in finding the kids.

A police officer responding to the scene encountered the suspect a couple blocks from the burning home, Magnus said.

The gunman rammed his SUV into the officer’s vehicle near Campbell Avenue and Irene Vista Road and shot at the officer, officials said.

The officer, who was not injured during the exchange, returned fire and shot the suspect, leaving him in ‘very critical condition.’
