Comedian Gabriel Iglesias tests positive for COVID-19 despite being vaccinated

Comedian Gabriel Iglesias has been forced to cancel an upcoming show after testing positive for COVID-19 — despite being fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

He announced the news via social media with a video titled, “Announcement I didn’t want to make on my bday.”

“Unfortunately, I have tested positive for COVID-19. I made sure that I got tested by two different types of tests and they both came back positive,” the comic shared Thursday on his 45th birthday.

Iglesias added that none of his symptoms were “debilitating” and credits his vaccination with “getting me through this as quickly as it did.”

The funny man was due to wrap up his 73-stop tour in San Antonio, Texas, this weekend, but will instead be quarantining for 14 days.

The Netflix star joked in conclusion, “Not the way I wanted to spend my birthday but at least I’m alive and I have cake. I can’t taste it or smell it, but I have it. Wish me luck and be careful out there.”

While testing positive for COVID-19 after full vaccination is rare, it is still possible and “expected,” as the jab is not a cure, nor is it 100% effective, the CDC says. Compared to unvaccinated individuals, however, there’s only a slim chance of these so-called “breakthrough” infections in those who are fully vaccinated.

Fans who’ll have to wait two weeks to see the comic can at least hear his voice in the new “Space Jam” sequel, which is available to stream on HBOMax and opens in theaters today.

Iglesias voices cartoon mouse Speedy Gonzales, a move he defended when the character was called out for playing up Mexican stereotypes.
