At least 30 people, including eight inmates and two sheriff’s deputies, have reportedly been injured in a possible prison riot in Southern California that authorities are calling a ‘mass casualty event.’

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Los Angeles Times that ‘several inmates and a few deputies were involved in an altercation.’ 

No further details were available as of early Thursday evening. 

First responders were called to the all-male Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic after receiving reports of a riot that left more than two dozen injured.

At least seven staff members and 10 inmates were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, CBS Los Angeles reported. There was no immediate word as to the extent of their injuries.

Los Angeles County Fire Department received the call about a possible riot at 3:11pm.

A spokesperson for the LACFD said the incident was described as a ‘large fight.’

No information is available as to the extent of the injuries.

There has also not been any confirmation as to whether Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were involved.

Independent journalist Austin Dave is reporting that two of those injured were LASD personnel.
