Malibu Barbie turns 50 with collabs from Colourpop, FUNBOY floats and more

Blonde hair, tan skin, flirty outfits — did someone say Malibu Barbie? In honor of the glamorous doll’s 50th anniversary, the brand has collaborated with a handful of awesome brands to celebrate properly!

If you grew up playing with Barbies, then you definitely know all about their special Malibu edition that came out in 1971.

Malibu Barbie was one of the brand’s most popular dolls and represented sun-loving “California Girls.” She originally wore a light blue bathing suit and lavender sunglasses and even came with a beach towel, too.

Now, five decades later, sales of Mattel Inc’s No. 1 brand skyrocketed 19 percent last quarter, driving a 10 percent revenue increase for the toy giant to $1.6 billion, the company announced earlier this year. Barbie boomed even better at brick-and-mortar retail locations, up 30 percent, Mattel said. The spike came as classic toy sales soared thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In honor of such momentous moments, check out these 50th anniversary Malibu Barbie brand collaborations — on pool floats from FUNBOY, makeup palettes from Colourpop, hair tools from CHI and so much more.
