New driving laws in major Highway Code overhaul could be a ‘'lifesaver' for motorists

GEM Chief Executive Neil Worth said “more detailed and specific advice” has the potential to “reduce risks” on the road. He said the new safety rules have the capacity to be a “lifesaver” on the roads.

Details on how drivers can be safe in a breakdown and manage congestion will also be included.

Driving rules were also being updated in some areas which contribute to accidents.

These include driving while tired, travelling in an unroadworthy car and tailgating other road users.

GEM has warned the risks can be particularly high when drivers are distracted behind the wheel.
