Sergio Mora warns Oscar De La Hoya off comeback fight with Floyd Mayweather

‘You don’t want to go in with a guy who already beat you and lives like a Greek God’: Sergio Mora warns Oscar De La Hoya off comeback fight with Floyd Mayweather 14 YEARS after initial bout

  • Oscar De La Hoya is planning a comeback 13 years after his retirement
  • De La Hoya hopes to face Floyd Mayweather after taking on two MMA fighters
  • He is due to take on Vitor Belfort in September and wants to fight Anderson Silva
  • But former champion Sergio Mora warns De La Hoya against a Mayweather bout

Former boxing champ Sergio Mora has advised Oscar De La Hoya to avoid a rematch with Floyd Mayweather on his comeback, 14 years on from their initial bout.

De La Hoya, 48, returns to the ring when he takes on UFC champion Vitor Belfort on September 11.

Following that bout he is looking towards another MMA opponent in Anderson Silva before hoping to prove himself in a rematch with Mayweather, who he lost to back in 2007.

Mora, a former WBC light-middleweight champion, and now a DAZN pundit thinks De La Hoya should avoid the temptation of a money-spinning rematch with Mayweather, stating that he will not be able to get into a physical condition to take on the undefeated great.

He said: ‘For Oscar De La Hoya to fight in a rematch, their first match Floyd Mayweather won to become a superstar was 14 years ago.

‘That was in 2007. They’re in different pieces in their life, they live different lifestyles. We know Mayweather lives like a Greek god.

‘He doesn’t drink, he doesn’t imbibe, he doesn’t socialise, doesn’t’ do all the things that are bad for your health.

‘Oscar De La Hoya on the other hand, we know he likes to have a good time.

‘Look, I’m not gonna say nothing about it, but at almost 50 years old, no, you don’t want to go in with a guy who already beat you, and lives a Roman lifestyle, and doesn’t do all that, and three, he’s still that damn good, he looks a good as he was 10-15 years ago.’

De La Hoya has not fought since suffering a brutal loss by Manny Pacquiao in 2008 and in the years since has been running his own Golden Boy promotional stable.

After being inspired by Mike Tyson’s comeback, the 48-year-old is now the latest star keen on a return to the ring.

Although Mayweather retired in 2017, he has been back in the ring recently, taking on YouTuber Logan Paul earlier this month and being unable to secure a victory.

Although Mayweather has suggested he is against another exhibition bout, the likes of Tyson, De La Hoya, Evander Holyfield and Roy Jones Jr are all keen on match-ups, but Mora is against the nostalgic fights.

Mora added: ‘I have to understand or accept that there’s a market for these old champions, these legends, to come back, but I don’t want them coming back facing guys they already lost against.

‘It’s not interesting. If these old legends want to make a comeback, to fight a UFC fighter, an MMA fighter, a kickboxer, a wrestler, I’m OK with that.’
