Woman killed, 3 injured when car slams into protesters in Minneapolis

A woman was killed and three other people injured when a car drove into a crowd of protesters in Minneapolis, which has been beset by unrest following the shooting death of a fugitive who opened fire at cops.

The unnamed driver, who was yanked from his vehicle by protesters after the crash late Sunday, is in police custody while being treated for unspecified injuries, the Star Tribune reported.

His motive wasn’t immediately known, according to the newspaper.

Some of the protesters pulled the man out of his car and began to hit him before officers took the suspect into custody, KARE 11 reported, citing a police news release.

Video posted on social media appears to show the moment the driver was pulled out of the car after driving into the crowd.

The woman later died of her injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center, KARE 11 reported. She has not been identified.

Another person suffered non-life threatening injuries. Later Monday morning, two others showed up local hospitals with minor injuries from the incident, police said.

There were early indications drugs or alcohol may have been involved in the deadly incident, which occurred in the Uptown area where rapper Winston Boogie Smith, 32, was fatally shot outside a parking garage on June 3.

Smith, a father of two, was wanted in neighboring Ramsey County for failing to appear for a sentencing hearing, at which he was set to learn his punishment after pleading guilty to felony firearms possession.

When members of a US Marshals task force spotted and approached Smith, he allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire, leading them to return fire and kill Smith, officials have said.
