DOJ ‘subpoenaed Trump’s sitting White House counsel Don McGhan’s records from Apple in 2018’
- In February 2018, DOJ requested a subpoena for two Apple accounts: one belonging to Don McGahn and one belonging to his wife, Shannan
- Apple complied with the request, but have not disclosed what kind of information they handed over to the Justice Department
- At the time, McGahn was serving as White House counsel for Donald Trump, and the DOJ was in the midst of their Russia investigation
- McGahn confirmed in sworn testimony last week that Trump pressured him to instruct top DOJ officials to dismiss special investigator, Robert Mueller
- McGahn resigned from the White House in October 2018
The Justice Department subpoenaed information from an Apple account belonging to former White House counsel Don McGahn, according to a bombshell new report.
Apple last month informed McGahn, who worked for President Donald Trump, that the DOJ requested information from the account back in February 2018.
The company was prohibited from telling McGahn about the subpoena at the time, two people briefed on the matter told the New York Times.
The tech giant complied with the DoJ request, but have not disclosed what kind of information they handed over.
According to The Times ‘it is not clear what FBI agents were scrutinizing, nor whether McGahn was their specific focus’.
In the past, agents have been known to probe Apple accounts to find names, email addresses, digital correspondences and credit card transactions.
The DoJ also reportedly subpoenaed an Apple account belonging to McGahn’s wife, Shannan.
McGahn served as White House counsel from the day of Trump’s inauguration in February 2017 until his resignation in October the following year.

The subpoena – which was filed on February 23, 2018 – came just weeks after a bombshell New York Times report claiming Trump had asked McGahn to instruct top Justice Department officials to dismiss Robert Mueller.
At the time, Mueller was serving as special counsel for the DoJ’s probe into claims the President colluded with Russia during the 2016 election.
McGahn had reportedly refused to follow through with the President’s demands and instead threatened to resign.
It’s possible that the subpoena may have been issued off the back of that report, in an attempt to find any evidence that the President had been trying to unlawfully sway the investigation.

Last week, during a closed-door House Committee hearing, McGahn testified that the New York Times report was true.
Transcript from that testimony confirmed that McGahn felt ‘perturbed’ by Trump’s efforts to shut down the Russia probe.
McGahn told House of Representatives investigators that he felt ‘trapped’ after a June 2017 phone call in which the then-president asked him to pressure a Justice Department official to fire Mueller.
‘After I got off the phone with the President, how did I feel? Oof. Frustrated, perturbed, trapped,’ McGahn testified.
According to the Mueller Report, which was eventually released in April 2019, McGahn had complained to White House chief of staff Reince Priebus that Trump was trying to get him to ‘do crazy shit.’
The president reportedly responded that McGahn was a ‘lying bastard.
McGahn eventually resigned from the White House in October 2018.
