A British man is fighting for his life after trying to jump from a third floor balcony into a swimming pool in Spain.

The 31-year-old missed the water, crashing into a sunshade before hitting the ground. He suffered a severe head injury, internal organ damage and multiple broken bones.

The man had been attending a party with friends on Monday evening when he attempted the feat, known in Spanish as balconing, at an apartment complex in San Pedro de Alcantara, near the popular resort of Marbella.

Emergency responders spent nearly 40 minutes stabilising the injured man at the scene before he was taken by ambulance to the Costa del Sol Hospital (pictured) a 20-minute drive away

Last month, a 24-year-old Norwegian tourist died after losing her balance and plunging from a ninth-floor balcony in the Costa del Sol resort of Marbella as she took a selfie.

She is said to have gone out on the balcony to smoke and take some holiday snaps and videos while a couple she had met during her sunshine break were trying to get their baby child to sleep.
