Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are set to lead a film about the New York Times reporters who broke the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal story in fall of 2017.

The actresses are being courted for roles as journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor in She Said, an upcoming film about the bombshell investigation based on the New York Times bestseller She Said: Breaking The Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite A Movement.

A litany sexual misconduct accusations were leveled against Weinstein in the October 2017 report, eventually leading to the film exec being sentenced to 23-years in prison for rape in March 2020 while also inspiring the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements to fight sexism in the workplace and beyond.

She Said will not center on the Weinstein investigation but is instead focusing on the ‘all-women team of journalists who persevered through threats of litigation and intimidation, to break a game-changing story,’ according to Deadline.

The project will be structured like other revered films journalism films Spotlight and All the President’s Men, laying out the story like a procedural.

Kantor and Twohey were able to track down dozens of accusers while also detailing how victims were manipulated into staying silent with hush money and threats of professional retaliation.

Weinstein would be ousted from his role as co-chair of The Weinstein Company and is currently in maximum security prison.

He still faces additional charges in California.

In April Weinstein was indicted on eleven counts of sexual assault in Los Angeles County and he is facing extradition to the Golden State from Wende Correctional Facility, where he is currently being held.

New York Times journalists Kantor and Twohey would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for their investigation, along with Ronan Farrow, who also took down Weinstein with his reporting for The New Yorker.

She Said plans to start production this summer, directed by Unorthodox director Maria Schrader from a script penned by Oscar-winner Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment will be producing the film for Universal Pictures after jointly optioning the rights to the source material in 2018.
