Diamondbacks announcer Bob Brenly mocks Marcus Stroman’s du-rag

PHOENIX — An attempted wisecrack from the Diamondbacks television booth left Marcus Stroman irked by its racial undertones Tuesday.

Diamondbacks analyst Bob Brenly, commenting on Stroman’s head covering under his cap, spouted: “I’m sure that is the same du-rag that Tom Seaver used to wear when he pitched for the Mets.”

Stroman wasn’t amused. After the Mets’ 6-5 loss to the Diamondbacks in 10 innings, he retweeted a fan who commented: “I am not surprised by this type of language towards African-American athletes. It’s the blatant racism and it’s been going on for a long time.”

Stroman replied: “Since I can’t say it because media will turn this against me somehow.”

The 30-year-old right-hander also tweeted: “Onward and upward…through all adversity and racist undertones. The climb continues through all!”

Stroman later posted pictures of himself in the head covering with the message: “Du-rags coming soon. @HDMHApparel.”
