Patrice Evra ruthlessly mocks Man City after their Champions League final defeat by Chelsea with ex-Manchester United defender using photoshopped photo of him and Sir Bobby Charlton to ‘check for City’s name’ on the trophy

  • Manchester City lost 1-0 to Chelsea in Saturday’s Champions League final
  • Pep Guardiola’s men failed to add the crown to their Premier League title
  • Ex-Manchester United defender Patrice Evra delighted in their rivals’ failure
  • Evra appeared in three Champions League finals for United, and won it in 2008

Patrice Evra has taken a ruthless swipe at Manchester City following their Champions League final defeat by Chelsea by using a photoshopped image of him and Sir Bobby Charlton to ‘check for’ their name on the trophy.

Pep Guardiola’s men failed to secure a treble this season after losing 1-0 to Thomas Tuchel’s men in Porto, with Kai Havertz scoring the only goal of the game to secure the Blues’ second Champions League win following their 2012 success.

A win for City would have seen them claim their first ever Champions League crown but they ultimately came up short in following up their Premier League and Carabao Cup wins.

And former Manchester United left-back Evra was clearly delighted by their city rivals’ failure, with the Frenchman sharing an image Instagram of Charlton and his face photoshopped on top of Jimmy Ryan’s face along with the Champions League trophy.

The former France defender then led with the caption: ‘Sir Bobby can you check for City’s name again? Nope, still not here Pat… I love this game.’

The original photo that Evra photoshopped is a photo of former Scottish star Ryan and 1966 World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton looking at the European Cup at Old Trafford, after United had beaten Benfica 4-1 in the 1967-68 final at Wembley.

Evra, 40, also lifted the same trophy exactly 40 years later after Sir Alex Ferguson’s side inflicted the only defeat Chelsea have suffered in a Champions League final in Moscow on penalties.

Evra also featured in two other Champions League finals with United, but his side were defeated by Barcelona on both occasions; in Rome in 2009 and at Wembley two years later.

United’s latest European final also ended in defeat, with Villarreal triumphing in the Europa League final on Wednesday on penalties, with Evra’s former team-mate David de Gea having a crucial spot kick saved by opposite number Geronimo Rulli in Gdansk.

The former left-back – who made 379 appearances for United after joining from Monaco in 2006 – has continued to be warmly received among the clubs’ fans and has caused stirs on social media and on Sky Sports.

His most infamous appearance with Sky came in October last year when he shed a few tears after United’s humiliating 6-1 defeat by Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Earlier this season, he slammed the Arsenal sides he used to face as ‘like I was playing against a baby’, while also claiming Leeds’ Ezgjan Alioski deserved an Oscar award after reacting theatrically to Gunners winger Nicolas Pepe’s headbutt in their 0-0 draw in November.

Evra also appeared to put Thierry Henry in an awkward situation after revealing the Gunners legend once refused to watch a game his former side were playing him when he saw Granit Xhaka was captaining the side.

He also accused Liverpool fans of a lack of ‘class and respect’ after sharing a letter from the Merseyside club apologising for the 2011 Luis Suarez incident.

Along with an image of a 2019 apology letter from Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore, Evra hit out at the Liverpool fans who have given him abuse in the years following the incident.

Evra captioned the letter in January: ‘I wish the Liverpool fans had the same respect and class as you Peter Moore.’
