The intriguing Tim Tebow conspiracy theory floating around the NFL

If future Hall of Famer Drew Brees can share snaps with Taysom Hill, surely Trevor Lawrence can make room for Tim Tebow.

At least that’s what some conspiracy theorists in the NFL are thinking when it comes to figuring out why Jaguars coach Urban Meyer signed Tebow to play tight end and learn a new position after not appearing in an NFL game since 2012 with the Jets.

“There are those in the league who think Urban Meyer is bringing Tebow in to play QB at that Taysom Hill role,” ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported on “Get Up.”

“Using him in that Wildcat [package] as we’ve seen him Urban Meyer in the past.”

Well, that would be a game-changer because it would mean putting Tebow on the 53-player regular-season roster and not just the 90-player offseason roster, when there are spots to spare for developmental projects.

Despite the outrage in corners of the NFL, it makes sense for Meyer to carry Tebow – one of his all-time favorite players from their national championship-winning days at Florida – on the roster in the offseason to help set the culture and be a translator between coaches and players. From a business standpoint of selling tickets, Tebow remains wildly popular in the Jacksonville area because of his college exploits.

The Jaguars used the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft on Lawrence, who is considered one of the four greatest quarterback prospects of the last 40 years, along with John Elway, Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck. It is clear Lawrence is going to start.

But if Meyer, an offensive innovator, thinks Tebow still can throw jump passes near the goal-line, it would be an interesting wrinkle. Tebow was spotted running routes as a tight end at Friday’s OTA practice.

Hill has 809 rushing yards and 306 receiving yards with 18 combined touchdowns over four seasons. He also played on special teams. But when Brees was injured last season, he took over as the starting quarterback. And now he and Jameis Winston are battling to replace the retired Brees as every other team in the NFL looks for their own version of Hill.

“Take a look at all his different offenses,” Russini said. “It actually makes a lot of sense. So, yes, he may be on the roster as a tight end, but there may be more to this Tebow experiment than him just playing that position.”
