Conor McGregor has mocked Dustin Poirier by tweeting an image of the Irishman wearing sun glasses with an image of their 2014 encounter in the lens.

McGregor will take on the American in a trilogy fight on July 10 with both fighters claiming one victory each – the Irishman in 2014 and Poirier last January.

And as the third UFC fight between the pair edging ever closer, McGregor has hinted he wants a first-round victory over Poirier by sharing the image.

McGregor beat his next opponent after just one minute and 46 seconds of their UFC 178 clash in Las Vegas.

The victory came in the middle of a 15-fight unbeaten record for McGregor which ended when he lost to Nate Diaz in 2016’s UFC 196 event.

But Poirier stunned McGregor on his first fight back after retiring from UFC in June 2020 via a second round technical knockout last January in Abu Dhabi.

That outcome has provoked a third fight which will take place in the heart of Las Vegas, which Poirier’s coach Mike Brown believes has the potential to be the biggest pay-per-view fight in history.

‘Yeah, this is the right choice,’ Brown told MMA Junkie when asked about the third fight. ‘Conor is the biggest draw in this sport, and I think this well sell more pay-per-views than any other fight.

‘This potentially will be the biggest pay-per-view of all time. It really has that capability, and it probably will. I believe that, and the title fight will always be there after.

The pair will face off for a third time in UFC 264 on July 10 - this time back in Las Vegas

‘He (Poirier) still getting better all the time, and another guy who has paid his dues more than anyone. These are the guys that took the long road, the guys that deserve it more than anybody.

‘So I like where we’re sitting in this fight, and I’m very confident going into it. The fight game is very complex.

‘This is one weapon of potentially thousands or more. We’re talking about one weapon there. Dustin has got a lot of them.’
