Two detectives are shot after gunman barricaded himself into home in Dublin

Two detectives were shot and wounded during an armed siege in Dublin, which saw a gunman barricade himself into his home.

The plainclothes detectives, in their 30s, were shot while investigating reports of gunshots in a housing estate in Clonsilla, in the Blanchardstown area of Dublin, on Tuesday evening.

Both male detectives suffered gunshot wounds to the foot, while one also had a hand-wound, during the events at Whitechapel Grove just after 7.30pm, according to An Garda Síochána, the Irish police service.

Footage taken by an eyewitness at the scene shows Garda members apparently sheltering behind vehicles on the estate during the armed stand-off.

In the video, one man, believed to be a Garda member, could be seen being carried towards an ambulance with a bandage around his foot, apparently from a gunshot wound.

A man in his late 30s, who is reportedly known to gardai, was arrested at the scene and is being held in custody at Blanchardstown Garda station.

The two male gardai are being treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at Connolly Memorial Hospital.

Plainclothes and uniformed Gardai were responding to reports of gunshots when the suspect barricaded himself inside his home and open fired on the armed support unit.

Garda members took cover behind a patrol car, which was struck by bullets, before gunshots were exchanged between the male suspect and the armed detectives in a stand-off which lasted several hours.

Garda units had sealed off the area around the house and a number of houses were also evacuated for the residents’ safety, police confirmed.

The armed stand-off saw a critical fireman’s incident response put in place and an operational commander appointed, while a negotiator unit and armed support units were present, according to An Garda Síochána.

It is understood that following ‘intensive’ negotiations, two firearms – an automatic pistol and handgun – and ammunition were surrendered from the house shortly after 9.30pm.

Blanchardstown Gardai are continuing to investigate the circumstances around the critical firearms incident, according to the Garda.

A Garda spokesperson previously said: ‘Two Garda members are currently being treated at Connolly Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.’

A media blackout had been requested during the incident, which was later lifted soon after 10pm.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he was shocked and deeply concerned to hear of two gardai being injured in the course of their duties.

‘I wish both gardai a swift and full recovery, and I thank them for their service on behalf of the public,’ he said.

‘This incident in Dublin shows yet again the danger An Garda Siochana often face in their efforts to protect and serve the people.

‘We should always be very grateful for all the work they do on a daily basis on our behalf.’

The scene remained sealed off on Wednesday morning as forensic teams carried out an examination of the area.

Justice Minister Heather Humphreys said her thoughts are with the injured officers and commended all of the gardi who were involved in the incident.

‘I have been in contact with the Garda Commissioner this [Tuesday] evening, and I am relieved to hear that the situation was resolved following negotiation.

‘I want to commend all of the Gardai who were involved in ensuring there were no further injuries,’ she said.

‘Shocking incidents such as this remind us of the dangers the men and women of An Garda Siochana face every day.

‘We must always remember that in wearing the uniform and serving the Irish people, they place our protection and their duty to the State above their own safety.

‘An investigation into the incident is now under way and I urge any member of the public with any information or footage to contact Blanchardstown Garda Station.’
