Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy ahead of the Champions League final.

Mendy was forced off at half-time in a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa after colliding with the frame of the goal as he tried but failed to keep out the opening goal by Bertrand Traore.

He will undergo scans on Monday to find out the extent of the damage and work out his chances of being fit for Saturday’s showpiece against Manchester City in Porto.

‘He has big pain in his ribs,’ said Tuchel. ‘We need to wait and do some images and have an update. We have a week to prepare and will see if it is possible and if it is possible do all we can to see he is involved on Saturday.’

Mendy has proved a steadying influence for Chelsea since his arrival from Rennes in September, and many of the improvements under Tuchel have been founded upon the solidity in defence.

‘We needed to have many clean sheets to overcome our lack of composure and precision,’ said Tuchel, who lost his first away game as Chelsea boss and was relieved to find Tottenham beat Leicester.

‘We conceded two goals out of nothing and from set-pieces. We made it hard to come back, we had enough chances to come back and turn it around.

‘We are lucky Tottenham did the job for us. We came to win and put any doubts to the side and that was not possible.

‘But we were in the position where it was possible to end in top four with a defeat, and that was because of team’s hard work and consistently good results.

‘We need to adjust details and be spot on, on Saturday, because we want a positive outcome.’
