Liverpool's Mohamed Salah reveals how Man Utd motivated his team-mates ahead of 4-2 win

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has said that the motivation for the Reds’ 4-2 win against Manchester United was their opponents fielding a weaker team in their previous match against Leicester City. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made 10 changes before United’s game against the Foxes, enforced due to a packed schedule that included three games in five days.

He handed full debuts to teenage forwards Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga in a vastly different team to the one that had beaten Aston Villa two days earlier.

A 2-1 win for Leicester weakened Liverpool’s chances of a top-four finish, leaving them six points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side.

And Salah has said that the sense of injustice prompted a desire to seek revenge when Liverpool met Man Utd on Thursday.

A Nat Phillips own goal put Jurgen Klopp’s side behind at Old Trafford, but a thrilling comeback presents an outside chance of still qualifying for the Champions League.

Diogo Jota equalised with a clever backheel after Phillips had fired an effort towards goal. Roberto Firmino then handed Liverpool the lead just before half-time, and then scored another two minutes after the interval.

United forward Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back before Salah struck in injury time.

“They (United) rested most of their players the last game to play this one and keep us out of top-four places, but this motivated us to win,” Salah told BeIN Sports.

“I hope [Thursday’s goal] is a sign to continue scoring regularly against United. I was unlucky, but the most important thing that we won.”

The Anfield outfit are fifth, four points behind Chelsea’s 64, although the Reds have a game in hand.

Leicester are two points above the Blues in third. But Salah is insistent that his side can still qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“I am very proud [to reach 200 appearances with Liverpool]. I play in a club I love, 200 games where I achieved good numbers. It’s something I am happy for and I worked to achieved.

“Everything remains in our hands. We have to win our remaining games without waiting to receive favours from anyone.”
