Senator Ted Cruz accused MSNBC host Joy Reid of using a racial slur after she called him ‘Stephen’ from the moving Django Unchained for calling the Democrat-backed proposal on voting ‘Jim Crow 2.0’

The Republican senator railed against Reid on Tuesday, tweeting that her ‘arrogant condescension’ is leading Hispanics to the Republican party.

During a segment on her show on Monday night Reid compared Cruz to Stephen from Django Unchained, referring to the treacherous slave portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film.

Stephen’s character is portrayed as loyal to his slave master.

Cruz was not pleased with Reid’s comparison and accused the host of using a racial slur.

‘I appreciate MSNBC lecturing me on how people of ‘my race’ are supposed to vote. This arrogant condescension is a big reason Hispanic voters are moving right in large numbers. Also, why is MSNBC ok with their hosts using overt racial slurs (‘Stephen from Django’)?’ Cruz tweeted.

The comparison came after Reid said she was beyond offended that Cruz, who she said was a part of the ‘Jim Crow party,’ would allude to the voting right bill as a ‘Jim Crow 2.0’

‘Ted Cruz says a lot of stupid things,’ Reid said. ‘He does a lot of stupid things. But I personally, as a person of color, as a black person, am beyond offended that he would dare use the word ‘Jim Crow’ when his party is literally a ‘Jim Crow’ party at this point trying to suppress the votes of people, including in his home state.’

Cruz has opposed the Democratic- backed ‘For The People Act,’ a bill that supporters say expands voting rights.

It comes as Republicans across the country are looking to tighten voting rules, saying that a more secure voting system is needed.

Cruz referred to the Democratic bill as ‘Jim Crow 2.0,’ referencing the late 19th century state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the South.

Cruz claimed the bill would disenfranchise millions of Americans by allowing millions of people to vote illegally.

In April, President Joe Biden claimed Georgia’s new voting rules, which are seen to tighten election rules, are a ‘Jim Crow law’

During the segment Reid, who is black, alluded to herself and her panel of people of color, including Democratic Senator Alex Padilla, and said that they were the Republican party’s worst nightmare in the voting booth.

‘What you see here on the screen is what Republicans fear in the voting booth and they’re going to do anything they can to make sure it doesn’t happen, including Stephen from Django Unchained, AKA Ted Cruz, whose working to stop fellow people of color from voting, which is amazing.’ Reid said.

Reid has previously referred to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as ‘Uncle Clarence’ and Black Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina as ‘token’ in the Republican party, Fox News reported.

‘Uncle Tom’ is considered an offensive term and refers to a literary character, Uncle Tom, who was a smiling, wide-eyed servant who offered no resistance to the horrors of slavery.

On Tuesday the Senate advanced the ‘For the People Act,’ setting up a floor vote for the bill.
