Adele's estranged father dies aged 57: Multi-millionaire singer was unable to patch up relationship

The estranged father of multi-millionaire singer Adele has died at the age of 57.

Mark Evans – who had not spoken to his daughter for years after a bitter falling out – passed away following a battle with cancer, The Sun reported.

A source told the newspaper that Mr Evans’s family were ‘of course very upset by his passing’.

They added that the relationship with his daughter remained ‘acrimonious to the end’, despite attempts to ‘make things right’.

He and his daughter famously fell out in 2011 when Mr Evans – who walked out on the singer when she was a child – claimed in an interview that she struggled to find love because of her abandonment issues.

It was revealed in 2019 that Mr Evans – who announced his bowel cancer diagnosis six years earlier – was earning just £50 a day as a Yodel delivery driver after giving up his career as a plumber.

Meanwhile the Rolling in the Deep singer’s net worth was reportedly £150million in 2020.

Mr Evans admitted he was a ‘rotten father’ to his daughter when she was growing up, blaming his alcoholism – triggered by the collapse of his relationship with Adele’s mother Penny Adkins – for the way he treated her.

He walked out when his daughter was three, leaving her mother to raise her single-handedly.

He said: ‘I was putting away two litres of vodka and seven or eight pints of Stella every day.

‘I drank like that for three years. God only knows how I survived it.’

He added that he was ‘deeply ashamed’ of what he had ‘become’, adding: ‘The kindest thing I could do for Adele was to make sure she never saw me in that state.’

Adele would spend school holidays in Wales with her grandparents and her half-brother Cameron following the split.

But Mr Evans suffered a breakdown after the death of Adele’s grandfather John in 1999, which caused him to lose touch with his daughter completely.

He said of that time: ‘Losing my dad was the single worst thing that has ever happened to me.

‘I loved him so much. He was everything to me. One of the hardest things for me is knowing he never saw Adele perform, never saw what she became.’

Mr Evans spoke of having a complete breakdown after his father’s death — he lost his hair to stress-induced alopecia — and drank two litres of vodka a day for three years.

Eventually a girlfriend stepped in and helped persuade him to stop drinking.

‘God only knows how I survived it, but somehow I did.

‘I hit the bottle so hard that I am pretty much oblivious to anything that happened to me in those three years, and I didn’t want Adele to see me like that.

‘I was deeply ashamed of what I’d become. The kindest thing I could do for Adele was to make sure she never saw me in that state.’

He has previously confessed to writing her letters every month to no avail and said he never gave up hope of seeing his grandson, adding: ‘She can’t be in any doubt that I want to see her, to find out what’s wrong and show her I want and need to play a part in her life other than Mr Rotten Dad.

‘She’s obviously taken against me and I feel powerless to change her opinion.’

In 2019 it was revealed that Mr Evans – who lived in a small rented home on a housing estate in Bridgend, South Wales – was earning between £50 and £100 for his role as a delivery driver – which involved delivering parcels for the Yodel courier service.

In his later years he was said to be ‘heartbroken’ over his relationship with Adele and just wanted to be a ‘normal grandad’ to her children.

‘He hasn’t got a life really, he’s just existing. He used to be a plumber but switched to the driving a few months ago,’ a friend said.

In the interview that led to their bust-up, Mr Evans took full responsibility for his failings as a father.

But he said Adele’s tumultuous love life – which features in her song lyrics – could be because of abandonment issues brought about when he walked away.

Reacting to his comments, Adele is understood to have said: ‘He’s f****** blown it.

‘He will never hear from me again. It makes me angry. To come back after 10 years and be like, “Maybe her problem with men comes down to me.”

‘It’s like, “How dare you comment on my life?” It makes my blood boil.’

In an interview with American Vogue in 2012, she said: ‘If I ever see him, I will spit in his face.

‘He will never hear from me again.’

In the 2017 Grammy’s – in which the singer took home five awards – Adele used one of her acceptance speeches to address her father.

She said: ‘Thank you to my manager because the comeback, as it were, was completely masterminded by him.

‘And you executed it incredibly, and I owe you everything. We’ve been together for 10 years, and I love you like you’re my dad.

‘I love you so, so much. I don’t love my dad, that’s the thing. That doesn’t mean a lot. I love you like I would love my dad.’

Her speech came after a reported reconciliation in 2015 – facilitated by Adele’s grandmother Rose – after Mr Evans’s bowel cancer diagnosis.

He said at the time: ‘Adele and I are fine, it was just a misunderstanding.

‘We’ve patched things up, everything’s fine, but I don’t want to make further comment. We’re fine.’

The former couple share son Angelo, eight.
