Missouri hunter mistakenly shoots hiker he thought was a turkey

A Missouri hunter mistakenly shot a hiker on Saturday who he thought was a turkey, a report said.

The shooting occurred just after 12:30 p.m. amid a turkey hunt at the August A. Busch Memorial and Weldon Spring Conservation Area, police told KSDK.

The male hiker was on the Lewis Trail loop when he was shot in the chest by the hunter, the report said.

He was taken by helicopter to an area hospital in serious condition.

A woman who routinely hikes the trail where the shooting occurred told KSDK that she wears bright colors “so no hunters mistake me for anything.”

A sign at the entrance of the trail announced the managed turkey hunt was going on in the area.

Sunday was Missouri’s final day of turkey hunting season, the report said.
