Aaron Judge gets key hit after being ‘terrible at the plate’

Aaron Judge knows he has had a rough time at the plate recently, but he was hoping Saturday would mark the start of his climb out of hole he recently dug for himself.

The Yankees right fielder was mired in an 0-for-16 slump with 11 strikeouts entering his at-bat in the ninth inning Saturday. He snapped out of it with a single poked to no-man’s land down the right-field line, setting up Gleyber Torres’ game-tying hit before the Yankees went on to beat the Nationals 4-3 in 11 innings.

“I’ve been terrible at the plate,” Judge said. “Just being a little overaggressive. Especially with Houston coming in and then facing the Nationals, really trying to just do too much at the plate.”

At the start of the current homestand, Judge had come out of his time off for lower-body soreness with a hot bat. But that quickly gave way to the skid he brought into Saturday.

“It’ll turn around,” Judge said. “Usually that’s how you start a hitting streak is with a little bloop or a dinker like that. So hopefully we’re on the right track.”
