Chris Martin set to take part in American Idol’s Coldplay-themed show as a mentor

Coldplay singer Chris Martin will be a mentor on next week’s American Idol, which will be themed after the band.

On the episode, which is slated to air Mother’s Day, seven finalists on the series will sing a track dedicated to a loved one in conjunction with the holiday, and a song from Coldplay.

The Grammy-winning musician, 44, is slated to be a mentor for the latter, Variety reported Sunday.

The Clocks singer chat and worked with the contestants at a studio in Malibu, California, according to Rolling Stone. 

The remaining top 10 performers headed into Sunday’s episode included Chayce Beckham, Casey Bishop, Cassandra Coleman, Deshawn Goncalves, Arthur Gunn, Caleb Kennedy, Grace Kinstler, Hunter Metts, Willie Spence and Alyssa Wray.

The show, which is in season 19, is hosted by Ryan Seacrest featuring judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

On the show, the English vocalist and his band will perform their new single Higher Power, the band’s first release in more than a year. Their last release came in February of 2020 with the single Champion of the World from the album Everyday Life.

The group tweeted Thursday about the new song, ‘Higher Power is a song that arrived on a little keyboard and a bathroom sink at the start of 2020. It was produced by Max Martin who is a true wonder of the universe.’

The band’s past hits include the 2000 ballad Yellow, 2003’s Clocks, 2008’s Viva la Vida and the 2017 collaboration with The Chainsmokers, Something Just like This.

American Idol featuring Martin airs May 9 on ABC at 8/7c.
