Texas rep calls for Dem official to resign after racist slur about Sen. Tim Scott

A county Democratic official from Northeast Texas is facing demands to resign after he used a racist slur to refer to South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott following the GOPers rebuttal to President Biden’s speech Wednesday night.

“I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles,” Lamar County Democratic Party chair Gary O’Connor wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post, Fox News reported.

Scott, one of only three Black U.S. Senators and the only Republican, has faced a barrage of racist attacks since his response to Biden’s address to Congress, including being called “Uncle Tim,” a reference to the novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”

That slur trended on social media for several hours Wednesday night. Twitter later banned the term from its trending topics.

Ironically, the attacks followed Scott’s attempt to portray the U.S. as an inclusive nation.

“Hear me clearly: America is not a racist country,” Scott stated in his speech. “It’s backwards to fight discrimination with different discrimination. And it’s wrong to try to use our painful past to dishonestly shut down debates in the present.”

Texas Rep. Pat Fallon, a Republican member of the House whose district includes Lamar County, called the slur “unforgivable” in a statement and called on O’Connor to “apologize and step down immediately.”

“Gary O’Connor’s comment against Senator Tim Scott is abhorrent, insulting, and unforgivable,” Fallon said. “Both he and the entire Lamar County Democratic Party should be ashamed of this racist behavior.”

Fallon also said the party “should take swift action to censure him” and called on the Texas Democratic party and the NAACP “to condemn these words.”

Texas Democratic officials did not respond to Fox or other news outlets seeking comment.
