Chelsea’s Timo Werner grabbed plenty of attention for the wrong reasons again after his glaring miss against Real Madrid and to make matters worse, Thibaut Courtois has since been caught joking about his sitter.

During the opening stages of the first leg of the Champions League semi-final tie in Madrid on Tuesday night, the £53million signing squandered a glorious chance to put Chelsea 1-0 ahead after he fired straight at Courtois from around the six-yard box with most of the goal to aim at.

It was the latest in a string of bad misses this season for Werner, and Courtois was caught making light of the opportunity with former Chelsea team-mate Olivier Giroud at half-time.

RMC Sport cameras snapped Giroud, an unused substitute on the night for Thomas Tuchel’s side, discussing the glorious opportunity with former Blues goalkeeper Courtois in the tunnel.

‘The save on Timo! Pffff,’ Giroud was seen telling Courtois in audio captured in the tunnel at hall-time.

The Madrid goalkeeper, while moving his foot to the right, then simply responded: ‘All I did was put my foot like this.’

Giroud bluntly replied ‘incredible’ before the pair put their game faces on again in Madrid on Tuesday night.

Just moments after Werner’s miss, Christian Pulisic had given Chelsea a thoroughly deserved lead thanks to a composed solo effort before Karim Benzema equalised with an emphatic acrobatic strike.

The tie is finely poised heading into the second leg next week at Stamford Bridge, but Pulisic’s away goal could prove crucial for Tuchel’s men.

Werner will be desperate to make amends next week for his miss, and he came in for criticism from a surprising source during the 1-1 draw in the first leg against Madrid.

Thiago Silva’s wife took to Instagram to launch an attack on his Chelsea team-mate Werner.

Silva’s wife Isabele was left less than impressed with Werner’s performance, especially after his miss from six yards out in the ninth minute.

She took to social media to criticise the German striker, claiming he ‘keeps missing goals’ and that he doesn’t ‘want to score’.

Speaking on her Instagram story she said: ‘This is karma, guys. Every team I go to there is a striker who keeps missing goals… this Werner, what is his name?’

In a second video she added: ‘We need a goal, we need to win this match but my attackers don’t want to score, I don’t know why they don’t score.’
