New Apple TV uses your iPhone to bring the ultimate picture to your television

Apple had a busy evening last night with the firm announcing a stunning new iMac, powerful iPad and refreshed iPhone 12 which now comes in purple. And that wasn’t all with the firm also revealing its latest Apple TV device which comes packed with plenty of features aimed at boosting your nightly boxset binge.

One of the most impressive updates coming to this mini set-top box is its ability to boost the visuals on the screen using the iPhone that’s tucked inside your pocket.

If your TV is looking a bit dark or too bright, then all you’ll need to do is hold your iPhone camera up to the screen with this smartphone’s light sensor able to compare the colour balance to the industry-standard specifications used by cinematographers worldwide.

Using this data, Apple TV automatically tailors its video output to deliver much more accurate colours and improved contrast — without customers ever having to adjust their television settings.

It’s clever stuff and could mean the end of searching for the remote and digging through endless menus in search of a better image.

Speaking of the remote, that’s changed as well with the 2021 Apple TV getting a completely redesigned channel changer that now features an innovative clickpad control and a new silver aluminium finish.

There’s also a new Siri button on the side for summoning the chatty assistant and this remote now has the ability to switch on your actual television without needing a separate remote.

The final big change is the new processor under the hood with the new Apple TV getting the latest A12 Bionic chip.

Not only does this brain make things faster when scrolling around the screen but Apple TV 4K now supports high frame rate HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Dolby Vision video, enabling fast-moving action at 60 frames per second.

“Apple TV 4K is in a category of its own, leveraging a deep integration of Apple hardware, software, and services that delivers a massive upgrade to any TV for the very best cinematic experience,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With the A12 Bionic and the all-new Siri Remote, Apple TV 4K lets customers enjoy their favourite shows, movies, and more in the highest quality, with simple and intuitive controls. And of course, Apple TV 4K offers easy access to Apple services, along with thousands of apps on the App Store for even more entertainment options.”

The new Apple TV 4K will be available starting at £169 from apple.com, in the Apple Store app, and Apple Store locations.

Apple says you can order later this month with the device expected to ship later in May.
