Selma Blair on the power of makeup: ‘It is my gorgeous war paint’

Selma Blair appreciates both inner and outer beauty.

The “Cruel Intentions” actress, 48, has been candid about the effects her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis has had on her life, including hair loss, needing to walk with a cane and more.

However, Blair says that makeup has been a saving grace, both before and after her diagnosis.

“I’ve been made up by some of the most famous makeup artists since I started acting, and I’ve felt so transformed by their makeup that I really did become a different person,” Blair told Town & Country for the magazine’s May cover story.

“It was a superpower to me, and I mean this. Makeup is not trivial to me,” she continued. “If anything moves the needle for me in my life — even before my diagnosis or challenges — it is my gorgeous war paint.”

Though Blair has always loved makeup, she’s recently had trouble painting her own face; in 2019, the star shared a lighthearted makeup tutorial on her Instagram.

“Brush. Big. Bronzer. There, done. Stop,” Blair said, laughing, while rubbing a huge brush around her entire face.

Blair has lost a lot of her fine motor skills, but she told Town & Country, “I don’t mind if my muscles get caught at the intersection of a slow brain signal. I just want those words to come from lips covered in Chanel gloss.”

Inside its pages, she stuns in a flowing Dior dress and a high-end cane by Scully & Scully, harkening back to her show-stopping moment at the 2019 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where she hit the red carpet with a cane.
