Hansi Flick has confirmed he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season after falling out with the club’s sporting director. 

The Bayern boss – who led club to success in the Champions League in 2020 – has asked the club to terminate his contract early after several disagreements with Hasan Salihamidzic over last summer’s transfer dealings. 

The 56-year-old – who is currently contracted until the summer of 2023 – was frustrated with how the club allowed Thiago Alcantara to leave and failed to find suitable cover for their star striker Robert Lewandowski.

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-2 win over Wolfsburg, he said: ‘I told the team today that I informed the club during the week, after the game in Paris, I would like to terminate my contract at the end of the season.’ 

He added that becoming Germany’s new manager in the summer remains ‘an option’. 

Having taken over from Niko Kovac in November 2019, Flick has won six trophies in 18 months with the Bundesliga side. 

As a result, Flick has been touted to take over from Joachim Low as the head coach of the Germany national team. 

Low recently announced that he will step down from his role as Germany manager following Euro 2020 after asking to end his contract early.

Therefore, Flick has been named as a potential successor to Low – who will be leaving the international side after 15 years at the helm. 

While Julien Nagelsmann has been linked with Bayern job after Matthaus told Sky Sports he is the German side’s top candidate to take over. 

Prior to Flick’s announcement, Nagelsmann insisted he was happy at RB Leipzig and that he nor his representatives had held talks with the Bundesliga leaders. 

Nagelsmann has impressed since taking the reigns at Leipzig in 2019, having guided them to the semi final of the Champions League last season.
