‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Season 2 Premieres in August, Announces Season 3 Renewal

Get ready to head back to the animated adventures of the USS Cerritos. As announced during the “Second Contact” panel at today’s First Contact Day celebration held by Paramount+, the Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 premiere will be Thursday, August 12. And not only that, but Lower Decks has been renewed by Paramount+ for a 10-episode long third season.

Set in the year 2380, Lower Decks takes a semi-satirical look at the Star Trek by focusing on the people who support the people who work on the main deck. Basically, think all the red shirts running around in the back of scenes and getting thrown across the hallway by explosions while William Shatner yells “Khaaaan,” and you’ve got the gist. Despite the comedy set-up, Lower Decks still channels the spirit of Star Trek, and has an ongoing story and character arcs, while also goofing around.

Season 1 left off with Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) essentially betraying his friends by getting a promotion to Riker’s (Jonathan Frakes) USS Titan. Left behind were: Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), the daughter of the ship’s captain, who prefers chilling with the support staff; Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells), a green nerd with penchant for causing accidental trouble; and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), an engineer who geeks out about the latest Starfleet tech. Also on the ship are Captain Carol Freeman, voiced by Dawnn Lewis, Commander Jack Ransom, voiced by Jerry O’Connell and Doctor T’Ana, voiced by Gillian Vigman.

In the first look at Season 2, it seems like things are business as usual for the Cerritos, with plenty of classic Trek Easter eggs, rainbows shooting out of Ransom’s hands, and Boimler getting way more than he counted for over on the Titan.

Created by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (Rick & Morty, Solar Opposite), expect lots more wild plots, more cameos, and just a whole lot more when Lower Decks returns in August.
