Kate Garraway talks 'hard' Easter as it emerges she's reading Piers' book to sick husband

Kate Garraway took to Instagram to say Easter was “so hard” this year for her, like it is for many others. The Good Morning Britain host and her two children are without Derek Draper, who remains in hospital.

The 53-year-old’s husband was hospitalised at the end of March last year with Coronavirus.

However, after a gruelling health battle, he is still under the care of doctors.

It has also emerged that Kate has been reading colleague Piers Morgan’s book, Wake Up: Why the ‘liberal’ war on free speech is even more dangerous than Covid-19, to him.

The mother-of-two shared a happy snap with her one million followers, before explaining how the family were spending Easter Sunday.

The image saw her neighbour with an impressive looking cake – a gift for her and her two children with Derek: Darcey, 15, and 11-year-old Billy.

Kate wrote alongside: “”#happyeaster everyone – so hard that it’s the second we’ve lived through in lockdown/restrictions.

“And of course our second without Derek home with us.”

She went on to share a positive message with users, saying she was thankful he was “stil here”.

He explained how Kate had said she was reading his latest release to her spouse of 16 years.

Piers, who marked his birthday on March 30, said it was a “stark reminder” that Derek was still not well enough to return home.

He said in the Mail On Sunday: “It served as a stark reminder of how grim things were on March 30, 2020, especially for my stupendously courageous and inspiring friend Kate Garraway.

“That was the day her husband Derek was rushed to hospital with Covid, and he remains seriously ill.”

The journalist added: “I spoke to Kate at length when her incredibly powerful documentary about it all aired on ITV last week, and she told me she’s been reading Derek my book, Wake Up.

“Never have I wished those words to be more prescient.”

During the show about Derek’s plight, Kate said she was still considering whether she’ll need to give up her career to care for him.

She said at the time: “If he needs 24-hour care, I will the primary carer. I have a fear of the reality of that life. It’s a completely different dynamic to our relationship.”
