2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV debuts in new commercial

This all-electric SUV promises incredible capability and immense performance.

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV debuted Saturday during the NCAA Final Four game in a commercial featuring basketball legend LeBron James. The next model in this revived brand’s all-electric portfolio, the new utility vehicle is dressed in boxy styling that’s nearly identical to the Hummer pickup that first broke cover last year.

Just like that truck, the Hummer EV SUV should offer some trail-dominating off-road capability. For starters, it features something called CrabWalk, which allows the front and rear wheels to steer the same direction at low speeds for greater maneuverability. This utility vehicle also has Extract Mode, which should lift the suspension by several inches to provide enhanced ground clearance.

With a significantly shorter wheelbase than the Hummer EV pickup, this SUV should deliver even better off-road performance thanks to its smaller size and improved departure and breakover angles. The turning radius is tighter, too, clocking in at a curt 35.4 feet when fitted with four-wheel steering, or about 3 feet less than a Honda Accord. This fancy feature will be standard on 2X, 3X and Edition 1 models.

Which do you prefer, the larger truck or the more maneuverable SUV?

Embellishing its already butch styling is an exterior-mounted spare tire. A standard Infinity Roof with removable Sky Panels should let plenty of light into the vehicle’s squared-off interior, which offers seating for five people.

Despite its rugged looks, the new Hummer EV SUV is purely electric, motivated by GM’s Utlium Drive System. Underneath that towering body is a 20-module battery pack that promises an estimated driving range of at least 300 miles when the vehicle is not equipped with the available Extreme Off-Road Pack. With a smattering of electric motors, the Hummer packs up to an 830-horsepower punch. Torque measures a claimed 11,500 pound-feet, but this figure is misleading since it’s actually wheel torque, not powertrain torque.

Give it a good whippin’, and the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV should be able to rocket from a standstill to 60 mph in a fleet 3.5 seconds. A top speed number has not been shared yet, but much more information about this all-electric SUV will be released soon.

Here it is in all its blocky glory, the 2024 GMC Hummer SUV’s interior.

As with the new Hummer truck, this SUV will launch with an Edition 1 special model. It features 22-inch wheels, assist steps and floor liners to keep mud and slop at bay when you’re out trail-bashing. GM’s groundbreaking Super Cruise is also included, which allows for hands-free driving on some 200,000 miles of supported roadway, plus it’s even capable of automatically changing lanes.

For drivers who are serious about getting dirty, the Extreme Off-Road Pack adds 18-inch wheels encircled by 35-inch mud-terrain tires. You also get underbody armor plating, rock sliders, a front electronic differential locker and virtual rear lockers, HD ball-spline driveshafts and even UltraVision cameras, including some underneath the body for near-360-degree visibility when out on the trail.

Hummer SUV production is slated to begin in early 2023, with the vehicle going on sale for the 2024 model year. As for pricing, you’d better be sitting down, because including destination fees the swanky Edition 1 model starts at $105,595. Grab an example with the Extreme Off-Road Pack and that price swells to an eye-watering $110,595. Giving you a way to spend even more money, nearly 200 accessories should be available at launch. You can learn more about this vehicle and even reserve one right now by visiting GMC’s website.
